About this event
The aim of our project ‘Building a Modern Scotland: The new towns c. 1947-2017’ is to find out about the experiences of people who live, or have lived, in the Scottish New Towns and we’ve interviewed people from Glenrothes. We’ve spoken with people from the first generation of residents, their children’s generation and grandchildren’s too.
Come along, find out more and let me know your views and opinions.

Our very own Dr Diane Watters will be leading a minibus tour of Livingston on Saturday 23 April for Docomomo Scotland. Here’s the details:
Built Livingston – A 20c architectural minibus tour (Docomomo Scotland)

An expert-led minibus tour to visit architecture and urban planning of the 20th century in the New Town of Livingston
About this event
This tour, led by Dr Diane Watters, will introduce the planning and architectural concepts of Livingston. Designated in 1962, and planned from 1966, it was Scotland’s fourth New Town. It adopted both traditional and Modern Movement public neighbourhood planning, alongside owner-occupied ‘estates’. Its early ambition to be a vibrant regional centre (which it achieved) resulted in high-status Post-Modern designed industrial and commercial zones. All this was confined in a regular grid.
Our bus and walking tour will visit pedestrian-traffic segregated linear housing areas, and their in-keeping public buildings. It will also experience Livingston’s impressive dual carriageways and interchanges, landscaping, public art, and shopping centres!
The bus will leave Lady Lawson Street (outside Edinburgh College of Art) at 10:00 am, returning there at 15:45. On request, we will also pick up and drop off at Livingston North Station. Ticket numbers are limited to 20 and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
If you are not yet a Docomomo member but would like to book a reduced-rate member’s ticket, you can join us online.
IMPORTANT NOTICE. You MUST NOT attend the tour if you know or suspect that you have Covid-19 or any of its symtoms. You MUST bring to the tour confirmation of a negative Covid-19 test no older than 24 hours, unless medically exempt. You MUST wear a face mask when in the tour bus, unless medically exempt.
